Planning changes what happens. The moves that save the most, such as timing income, choosing an entity, funding retirement plans or making an election, have deadlines during the year, and most of them pass before a return is ever prepared. We build planning into every engagement: a mid-year projection, a year-end meeting and estimated payments set from real numbers.## What planning looks like in practice- **Mid-year projection:** your expected income, deductions and tax for the year, with the decisions still open to you.
- **Year-end meeting:** a short list of specific actions before December 31, with the dollar effect of each.
- **Estimated payments:** set to the safe harbor (110% of last year’s tax for higher earners) or to actual liability, whichever serves you better.
- **Event planning:** a home sale, a business sale, a large RSU vest, a move between states or an inheritance gets its own analysis before it happens.## Strategies we use most### Pass-through entity tax (New Jersey BAIT, New York PTET)The individual deduction for state and local taxes is capped at $40,400 for 2026, and it shrinks for incomes above $505,000. State tax paid by an S-Corp or partnership through an elective pass-through entity tax is a business deduction instead, so it isn’t subject to that cap. The deadlines differ: New York’s PTET election must be made by March 15 of the tax year it applies to, while New Jersey’s BAIT election is due by the entity’s original return due date (March 15 of the following year for calendar-year entities). Estimated payments have to line up with the owners’ personal returns.### S-Corporation elections and reasonable salaryFor profitable owner-operated businesses, an S election can cut self-employment tax meaningfully. The salary has to be reasonable for the work, and the trade-off against the qualified business income deduction and retirement contributions needs to be modeled, not guessed.### Retirement and charitable timingSolo 401(k)s, cash balance plans, Roth conversions in lower-income years, donor-advised funds and gifts of appreciated stock can each change your bracket. We coordinate with your financial advisor so investment and tax decisions point the same way.### Equity compensationRSUs, ESPPs and options create income you don’t control the timing of, and default withholding is usually too low. See [tax planning for RSUs, ESPPs and stock options](https://shreecpas.com/services/equity-compensation-tax/) .## Frequently asked questions### When should we start planning for this year?Ideally by June, when there are still six months to act. September is still useful. After December 31 most options are gone, with a few exceptions such as IRA and HSA contributions and some retirement plan funding.### Is the BAIT election always worth it?Not always. It helps most when owners’ state and local taxes exceed the federal SALT cap, including high earners whose cap is reduced, and when they have significant New Jersey income. It needs care when owners live in other states, when distributions are uneven, or when the entity is short of cash for the estimated payments. We run the numbers each year.### Do you work with our financial advisor?Yes. We regularly coordinate with advisors and estate attorneys so retirement, investment and estate decisions reflect the tax picture.Talk it through with a CPAA free 45-minute strategy session with an experienced CPA.
