Spending more than 183 days in New York while keeping a permanent home there for substantially all of the year can make you a New York resident even if you live in New Jersey. We review your footprint before the state does.#### 2. Where you workIf your employer is in New York and you work from home in New Jersey by choice, New York may still tax those wages under its convenience rule. We get the sourcing and the New Jersey credit right on both returns.#### 3. Where your business earnsSales, staff and property in other states create filing duties. For pass-through owners, New Jersey’s BAIT and New York’s PTET can also turn state tax into a federal deduction outside the SALT cap.[NJ/NY commuter tax](https://shreecpas.com/services/nj-ny-commuter-tax/) [Multi-state tax and nexus](https://shreecpas.com/services/multi-state-tax/)[Image: Portrait of Prasanna Thiruvenkatachari, founder and managing principal of Shree Accounting]**Prasanna Thiruvenkatachari** Founder and Managing Principal## Experienced judgment on every engagement.Prasanna Thiruvenkatachari founded Shree Accounting in October 2016. Anything else, just ask.Ask us directly### Which areas do you serve? We are based at 688 Tabor Road in Morris Plains and serve individuals and businesses across Morris County, NJ, including Morristown, Parsippany, Denville, Madison and Florham Park. We also work with clients throughout New Jersey, New York and the United States, online or in person.### Do you work with individuals, or only businesses? Both. We prepare and plan personal returns for families, W-2 professionals and executives, the self-employed and Americans abroad, and we handle the business and owner returns together for business clients.### Can you work with clients in any state?Yes. Federal tax is federal, and we prepare state returns nationwide, from solo founders to multi-state partnerships. The NY/NJ corridor is our deepest specialty, and we also work with clients in other states and Americans abroad with US filing obligations.### Can one firm handle our bookkeeping, payroll and tax?Yes. The same firm closes your books each month, runs payroll and files payroll taxes in every state where you have staff, and prepares the business and owner returns from those books. You can also start with one piece and add the rest later.### What does a fractional CFO engagement look like? It’s a structured monthly retainer. We attend board or management meetings, own the financial reporting package, build and maintain your rolling forecast, and act as an adviser on capital allocation, pricing and investor communications. It typically suits companies with $2 million to $50 million in revenue.### We’re a NJ-based company but one employee works from NY. Do we have an issue?Potentially, yes. A single employee working in New York can create both payroll tax nexus and corporate income tax nexus for your company there. We’ll determine whether their role and compensation trigger a filing obligation and help you register correctly, or document a position if the activity is de minimis.### What is the NJ BAIT election and should my S-Corp use it?New Jersey’s Business Alternative Income Tax lets eligible pass-through entities pay tax at the entity level, creating a federal deduction that effectively gets around the federal SALT cap for the owners. It is most valuable when an owner’s state and local taxes exceed the federal SALT cap ($40,400 for 2026, reduced for income above $505,000), and it needs precise calculation to avoid overpaying and to make sure the NJ credit flows correctly to the owners’ personal returns.## Schedule your free strategy session.A 45-minute call with an experienced CPA, by phone, video or at our Morris Plains office.**What we cover**
